I get it. He looks like a guard.
We all saw the picture of him recently working out with Tristan Wirfs and Lane Johnson. Although Campbell has great height and athleticism, his shoulders and frame are very small. It wasn't even the arm length in the photo that stood out, but the narrow shoulders. People made jokes, people mocked.
But here's the deal. Will Campbell has been putting in the work. I get he had a terrible postseason run. He had a horrible Super Bowl. But Will Campbell was playing well for a rookie at left tackle before he had a brutal knee injury that placed him on IR. Campbell simply wasn't able to anchor well enough in the postseason with his weak knee, and he got knocked on his ass. But Campbell is a mean SOB (in a good way). He's gonna let that performance motivate him into having a successful sophomore season. Campbell should be back to 100% at the start of the season and extremely motivated to perform. He's still very young and will continue to become stronger as he ages.
Even though people want him to play at guard, we have to take into consideration what that does for your football team. In an ideal world, Campbell will play an above-average LT and Caleb Lomu will develop into your everyday RT for next season. Taking Lomu in the first round gave the Patriots the flexibility to use Lomu in a reserve role for his first season. What happens if Will Campbell sucks? Yes, you bump him to guard, but then you're left with the same gaping hole at tackle that you dealt with before you drafted Campbell. Lomu could switch over to LT, but after Moses retires, you have no one suitable at RT.
The Patriots' offense is relying on Will Campbell to be a solid LT for the foreseeable future. If it becomes apparent that he can only play guard, we are right back to the pre-2025 draft, needing a tackle in the worst way.
You should be rooting for Will Campbell to succeed, because it's what's best for the Patriots.
