The Patriots have made a series of roster moves today, one of which included releasing a former Boston College tight end.

Earlier Tuesday, the Patriots announced that they had claimed wide receiver Tejhaun Palmer off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals. As a corresponding move, the team released tight end Jeremiah Franklin.

Palmer joins a receiver room that currently holds ten other players: A.J. Brown, Romeo Doubs, Demario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Efton Chism III, Cameron Dorner, Kobe Prentice, Kyle Dixon and Nick DeGennaro.

Additionally, he becomes the second pass catcher to join the team this summer, Prentice the first, and gives the Patriots another big-bodied receiver.

The six-foot-one-inch wideout played his college ball at the University of Alabama, where he collected north of 1400 yards, nine touchdowns and had an impressive seventeen yards per reception average throughout his three seasons with the Blazers. Palmer’s “pull away” speed combined with his large stature stood out on his tape at U.A.B.

These traits allowed for the college standout to be selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. However, Palmer only appeared in one game for the Cardinals, which came in 2025.

Due to the Patriots’ crowded receiver room, this move isn’t one many expected. However, undrafted free agent rookie Cameron Dorner, who has flashed with the third team throughout camp, was not present during today’s practice.

This move could mean that Dorner is set to land on Injured Reserve. However, I also wonder if the team is looking to move on from wide receiver Kyle Dixon. Dixon came into camp as the most praised undrafted rookie wideout, yet has shown little to no promise so far. Dixon and Palmer are also similar body types, which makes a one-for-one swap all the more likely.

As for the corresponding move, Franklin was brought in as a late addition in 2026, and his profile plus local ties made him a fan favorite. Despite this, the former Boston College Eagle did not stand out, causing his release.

Contrary to the wide receiver room, the Patriots tight end group only consists of a measly six players: Hunter Henry, Eli Raridon, Tanner Arkin, Mitch Van Vooren, Jack Westover and C.J. Dippre (currently on P.U.P.).

Even with the lack of bodies at tight end, the team may be fine with having fewer bodies, as one can only assume they have a pretty good idea who is going to make the team at the position.

Franklin will now be placed on waivers, giving any team the opportunity to sign him. Palmer, on the other hand, could join New England on the practice field as early as Wednesday.
