It was a hell of a ride.

Kayshon Boutte has been an effective wide receiver for the New England Patriots, delivering some tremendous catches in some incredibly clutch moments. The most significant was his one-handed grab at home against the Houston Texans in the playoffs.

Boutte has worked his tail off for the opportunities he's had in New England, and they've been well deserved. He came into the organization as a late-round rookie who got buried on the depth chart by Bill Belichick because he didn't get two feet in bounds (IYKYK).

He worked his ass off to get back into the starting lineup at X and has been a secure target for Drake Maye as he has developed over the last two seasons.

But the Patriots just went out and added A.J. Brown. They also brought in Romeo Doubs. DeMario Douglas is still here. Kyle Williams is still developing.

Where exactly does Kayshon Boutte fit?

And remember, this isn't some 30-year-old receiver looking to hang around the NFL for another season. Boutte is 24 years old and entering the final year of his rookie contract. This is arguably the most important season of his NFL career as he looks to secure his next contract and earn more playing time.

The problem for Boutte isn't that he's unable to perform; it's that he won't be given the opportunity to show what he's worth.

And I can hear the comments already...

"You hate Boutte!"

No. I do not hate Boutte.

He's been a great underdog story and has performed in the clutch. But the Patriots are telling you how THEY feel about Boutte by trading for and signing two wide receivers this offseason who play X and Z.

Boutte is the odd man out in a contract year.

The Patriots have already been rumored to be shopping Kayshon Boutte for a Day 3 pick, going back to last season. They clearly believe they have better players who can perform at a higher level and help elevate Drake Maye.

The Patriots don't value Kayshon Boutte at the moment, so you gotta ask yourself...

Why would Kayshon Boutte want to be here?

If I'm his agent, I'm suggesting that a trade could be mutually beneficial.
