Training camp hasn’t even started, and Mike Vrabel has already delivered the first surprise of the summer.
DeAndre Hopkins is in Foxboro.
Not for a workout. Not for a contract.
To coach. At least for a few days.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported that the future Hall of Fame receiver is visiting the Patriots as he considers what comes after football. Vrabel confirmed Hopkins is “considering the possibility of a coaching career.”
It’s unclear whether that career would begin in New England. But Hopkins choosing Foxboro as his first stop says plenty.

Vrabel’s Pull Is Real

Hopkins and Vrabel go back to Houston, when Vrabel was a defensive assistant and Hopkins was becoming one of the best receivers in football.
Vrabel wasn’t even his position coach. He still checked in after the great games and the bad ones.
That’s the thing with Vrabel. The player relationships aren’t for the cameras. It isn’t some leadership seminar routine. He actually gives a damn, and players remember that.
They reunited in Tennessee in 2023, where Hopkins posted his most recent 1,000-yard season. They nearly did it again last year, before Hopkins chose Baltimore over New England.
The respect never changed.
As Hopkins ponders a career change, he could have started anywhere.
He chose Vrabel.

Remember Who This Is

Hopkins isn’t some recently retired depth receiver looking for an internship.
He has 13,295 regular-season receiving yards, more than 1,000 catches, five Pro Bowls and three first-team All-Pro selections. His hands, body control and route-running have been teaching tape for more than a decade.
His days as an elite receiver are all but over. He caught just 22 passes for Baltimore last season and remains unsigned as training camps open.
That makes this visit more interesting, not less.
Hopkins may not be ready to officially retire, but he’s already thinking about what comes next. And before his playing career is even over, he’s looking for another way to stay in the game.
The guy loves ball.

What Hopkins Could Give This Room
The Patriots don’t need Hopkins to catch passes.
They could use everything he knows.
A.J. Brown is elite, and Romeo Doubs is a legit threat. But even proven receivers benefit from another elite football mind in the room. For Boutte, if he’s still here, Pop Douglas, Kyle Williams and Efton Chism, the value is even more obvious.
Hopkins has seen every coverage, every leverage trick and every way a defense can try to erase a receiver. He has spent more than a decade solving those problems.
You can draft talent.
You can’t draft 13 years of answers.
Maybe Hopkins is only here for a few days. Maybe this becomes something more.
Either way, when he started thinking about life after football, he chose Vrabel.
