It’s early July in Foxborough.
Training camp is 2.5 weeks away, and the biggest storyline hanging over the Patriots’ defense isn’t some new addition or scheme tweak.
It’s the same one that’s been quietly simmering since spring. Christian Gonzalez and his contract.
The 23-year-old cornerback, the guy who’s turned into one of the league’s best at the position in just three seasons, made his feelings pretty clear back at mandatory minicamp in early June. He showed up after sitting out most of voluntaries, answered the questions, and didn’t sugarcoat it...
“I hope we get something done,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve said this multiple times. I’ve been drafted here. I want to be rewarded as a Patriot. I love this city. So of course I want to be here.”
Nearly a month later, those talks still haven’t produced anything close to a deal.
No public movement.
All we have is the fact that he bought a house in Massachusetts adjacent to Gillette Stadium. Is that enough to say he's definitely signing here?
No “sources say they’re getting close.” Just the same slow, methodical dance we’ve seen before with young stars who know exactly how valuable they are. Gonzalez is entering Year 4 on his rookie deal. The Patriots exercised his fifth-year option, so he’s under team control through 2027 at a very team-friendly $18.11 million that year.
This season? He’s due just $2.259 million. For a lockdown corner who can erase receivers and make plays all over the field, that number is a non-starter heading into camp.
The Patriots have leverage here. Two years of control plus the franchise tag option after that. Will they take the Jerry Jones route?
Gonzalez’s side wants the security and the money that comes with being one of the top corners in football. The team wants to make sure they’re not overpaying before they have to. This isn’t happening in a vacuum, either. The cornerback market is heating up across the league, with several other young or proven talents due for big paydays that could influence what Gonzalez ultimately commands. His Seahawks counterpart Devon Witherspoon, another 2023 first-rounder repped by the same agent, is in the exact same boat and eligible for an extension for the first time. The two stay in touch and whichever one lands first could easily set (or raise) the bar for the other.
The Bengals are staring down extensions for Dax Hill and DJ Turner II, both of whom could push toward that $20M+ annual range given the positional inflation. Joey Porter Jr. in Pittsburgh who is a far inferior player to Gonzo is also heading for an extension.
When Derek Stingley Jr. was in a similar spot with the Texans (entering his fourth year) they got a deal done for three years $90M.
Sauce Gardner with the Jets landed a four year, $120M extension around the same time. Those were the big, market-setting payouts young corners were chasing. But not every elite corner gets paid on that exact timeline. Trent McDuffie waited until what was basically his fifth year, got traded to the Rams in March, and immediately signed a record four-year, $124M deal ($31M per year).
Jaycee Horn and A.J. Terrell Jr. both cashed in with big four-year extensions in their fifth seasons too — $100M for Horn, $81M for Terrell. The point is these situations almost always get resolved. The money is there. The talent is undeniable. It’s just a matter of when both sides decide the price is right.
Patriots fans have seen this movie before. Ty Law held out back in the day and still got his big contract. Other stars have dragged things into camp or even the season and eventually signed. The organization has a history of eventually doing right by their best young players when the fit is obvious. The talks are moving about as fast as a preseason walkthrough. Both sides know Gonzalez isn’t going anywhere anytime soon with the option + the tag. The longer this drags without visible progress the more it becomes the elephant in the room every time someone asks about the defense.
Gonzalez wants to be rewarded as a Patriot. The Patriots clearly want to keep him. Somewhere in between those two truths is a deal that makes sense for everyone. It just hasn’t shown up yet. And with camp getting closer by the day, the waiting game is starting to feel a little less patient in Patriot Nation.
Personally I don't see a season without Gonzo getting a brinks truck backed up into his new house.
